village voice
The Village Voice Bookshop is quite known from David Sedaris' novels. He use to frequent this bookshop and host live readings.
tea + tattered pages
Aw maaan, this place has SUCH potential to be so awesome. Tea and Tattered Pages is a used bookshop / tea room. The concept is a brilliant idea but it's just dead in there.
san francisco + berkeley
San Francisco Book Co. is a promising place to find a cheap used pocket book:

.....and right around the corner I discovered Berkeley Books, ha! Another English used bookstore! Brilliant.

The Abbey bookshop, located near Shakespeare + Company, sells 80% used books 20% new books. I picked up a used copy of What is the What - an autobiographical novel about Valentino Achak Deng (written by Dave Eggers).
