Kendra: "Well yes, a couple but I mostly just hang out with my French friends that studied abroad in California."
Aude: "But what do you mean they are French studying abroad in California? Who are they?"
Kendra: "They are from France and they studied abroad at my university in California for one year. You know one of them, her name is Laetitia she helped me move in my first day, remember?"
Aude: "Oh yes, yes I remember her."
Kendra: "And when I drive you to ice skating we pass her street, I've pointed it out before..."
Aude: "Yes, but what do you mean study abroad? what do you learn?"
Arnaud: "When students decide to go to other countries to do their studies through exchange programs."
Aude: "Oh okay, so they study English?"
Kendra: "Well no, not necessarily, for instance Laetitia studied architecture at my school."
Aude: (really really confused) "Okay, but I still don't get it.... what do you learn when you study abroad?"
Clemence: "Come on Aude, you know, to faires les etudes a l'extranger."
At this point Aude starts laughing SO HARD. I've never seen her laugh so hard in my life. It was so glorious to hear it. Then she explained through her laughter that this whole time she thought that 'abroad' was an actual school subject or course of study.
So for example, if someone asked 'What do you study?'
a) 'I study French'
b) 'I study Mathematics'
c) 'I study Literature'
d) 'I study Abroad.' - according to Aude.
HAHHAHHA! It was sooo funny, all of us were laughing so hard! I can definitely see why she was so confused. I love language mix-ups, they are the greatest.
